Built in 1881 the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe, PA was a regular stop on the vaudeville circuit. Mae West, Al Jolson, John Phillip Sousa and the Dorsey Brothers all performed here. Over the past few years this community run theater has been undergoing significant restorations while hosting one of the most diverse musical programs anywhere. Upcoming jazz artists will be Billy Cobham's Spectrum Band on Labor Day and the Brooks Tegler orchestra performing a tribute to Benny Goodman on october 25.
Directions: Take the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike (Route 476) North to Exit 74. After tolls, stay in left lane to stop sign. Turn right onto Route 209. Take 209 South into Lehighton then Downtown Jim Thorpe. At downtown traffic light make left onto Broadway. Continue up Broadway 2 blocks. Opera House on right side around bend.
